When DPS Goes Tank

[Jun 11, 2009] by: Jason Zimmerman Share

I’ve always played a DPS, ranged to start, melee currently.  With the introduction of dual spec in the most recent content patch, I went ahead and equipped Jaltar with dual spec so I could experiment with tanking.  When in a pinch, it would be nice to have the option to off tank, or tank a 5 man.

I spent quite a bit of gold to enchant and gem some of my equipment for tanking.  Thankfully I had enough epic gear to use for tanking, without altering my DPS gear at all.  Not every piece is ideal for tanking but for now it will do.  After all of that, I’m still a little low on my defense rating, which is currently at 504.

What I didn’t know was that there was a defense cap, and that I wasn’t quite there yet.  I joined a heroic Violet Hold run recently and really enjoyed it.  I was able to tank it without any issues and really enjoyed it.  I don’t expect to make any moves in my main spec but it’s nice to have and to experiment with.

What I do want to do is spend some time working through some instances that will yield some tanking gear.  I’ll need to do some reading and figure out what I need and where to go.  I’m looking forward to it.

Have you been in a position where you’ve tested out other types of play?  Are you a Druid who tanks/heals, dps/heals, dps/tanks, etc?  What do you think?
